Installation and Maintenance Instructions for Wedge-Latch® Coupler
Specifications:
- Rated according to SAE J684.
- Minimum tongue overlap: 6.5 inches.
- Only compatible with 50° trailer tongues.
Tools Required:
- Torque wrench
- Grade 5 bolts with locknuts
- SAE 30 wt. motor oil
- Grease for ball pocket
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Weld-On Instructions:
- All welding must be performed by an AWS-certified welder.
- Ensure the coupler’s internal stop is butted against the end of the trailer tongue for maximum overlap.
- Weld both sides and the top using a minimum 3/16" fillet weld.
- Remove any excess paint or primer buildup from the ball pocket and latching mechanism after installation.
Bolt-On Instructions:
- A-Frame Couplers:
- Use mounting holes in the coupler housing to bolt it to tongue members.
- Use Grade 5 bolts with locknuts and torque to SAE proof load specifications:
- Ø 3/8”: 23 ft-lbs.
- Ø 1/2”: 55 ft-lbs.
- Ø 5/8”: 110 ft-lbs.
- Flat-Mount Couplers:
- Insert four (4) 5/8” Grade 5 bolts through the coupler and mounting plate.
- Tighten bolts to 150 ft-lbs.
- Adjustable Height Channels:
- For tongues 6” or less in height, gussets are required.
- Weld a 1/4” minimum fillet weld around the mounting bracket.
- Secure the coupler using (2) 5/8” x 5” Grade 5 bolts through the bracket holes and tighten to 100-110 ft-lbs.
Coupling Instructions:
- Block the trailer wheels.
- Align the hitch ball beneath the coupler ball pocket.
- Open the locking lever and lower the coupler over the hitch ball until it is fully seated.
- Close the locking lever, ensuring the latch engages and the ball clamp is below the hitch ball.
- Optionally, insert a 5/16” pin or lock through the lever.
Uncoupling Instructions:
- Block the trailer wheels.
- Open the locking lever and raise the trailer off the hitch ball.
- Return the handle to the closed position.
Maintenance:
Perform the following procedures at least annually:
- Check set screw torque.
- Grease the ball pocket.
- Oil pivot points with SAE 30 wt. motor oil.
- Inspect retaining pins and replace if necessary.
Safety Notes:
- Never exceed the rated capacities of the coupler, hitch, vehicle, or trailer.
- Always use the correct hitch ball size as indicated on the coupler body.
- Inspect coupler components regularly and replace worn or damaged parts.
- Ensure trailer safety chains and lights comply with SAE J684 standards.
