Safety Notes:
- Never exceed the towing capacity of any component in the towing system.
- Always chock trailer tires securely with wheel chocks before coupling or uncoupling.
- Never position any body parts between the truck and trailer or under the kingpin area during coupling/uncoupling.
- Always perform a pull test before towing to ensure secure coupling.
- Ensure lynch pins are installed on the handle and center pivot pin before towing.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Measuring Height:
- Chock trailer tires securely and extend the front trailer lifting jacks until the trailer is level.
- Measure from the ground to the trailer's kingpin skid plate or lube plate (if used).
- Measure from the ground to the truck bed surface. Subtract the two measurements to determine the required hitch height.
Assembly:
- Install Handle Assembly:
- Place the head assembly upside down and slide the handle assembly (#2) over the handle mount bar.
- Insert the latch spring (#6) into the slot on the handle mount bar and secure with M8 cap screws (#4) and lock washers (#5).
- Torque the M8 bolts to 16 ft-lbs and insert the safety lynch pin to lock the handle in the tow position.
- Attach Main Body to Mounting System:
- Secure the main body to the mounting rails using M14 bolts (#7), lock washers (#8), flat washers (#9), and nylock nuts (#10).
- Torque M14 bolts to 100 ft-lbs.
Coupling:
- Position the truck so the trailer’s skid plate is approximately 1/2" below the 5th wheel skid plate.
- Confirm the jaws are open (yellow indicator visible) and unobstructed.
- Back the truck slowly until the kingpin seats fully in the 5th wheel head, compressing the suspension.
- Confirm the jaws lock around the kingpin (green indicator visible). Insert the safety lynch pin into the handle to secure the lock.
Pull Test:
- Lightly tug the trailer using the towing vehicle to ensure secure coupling.
- If resistance is not felt, re-couple following the steps above.
Uncoupling:
- Chock the trailer tires and extend the front trailer lifting jacks to remove the load from the 5th wheel skid plate.
- Pull the handle to release the jaws and remove the kingpin from the hitch head.
- Slowly drive the towing vehicle forward to disconnect.
Maintenance Schedule:
- Before Each Use:
- Inspect integrated wear plates; replace if grooves are worn flat.
- Lubricate the center pivot point and locking pawl.
- Torque M14 bolts to 100 ft-lbs.
- Every 3,000 Miles:
- Grease the jaw and head pivot points.
- After Each Use:
- Clean the hitch with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly.
- Apply a rust inhibitor to exposed surfaces for long-term storage.
