Installation and Maintenance Instructions for Couplers
Specifications:
- Rated according to SAE J684.
- Minimum tongue overlap: 6.5 inches.
Tools Required:
- Torque wrench
- SAE 30 wt. motor oil
- Grade 5 bolts with locknuts
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Weld-On Instructions:
- Ensure all welding is performed by an AWS-certified welder.
- Position the coupler on trailer tongue members with a minimum overlap of 6.5 inches.
- Weld both sides and the top using:
- Straight Tongue Couplers: Minimum 1/8" fillet weld.
- A-Frame Couplers: Minimum 3/16" fillet weld.
- Remove excess paint or primer from the ball pocket and latching mechanism after installation.
Bolt-On Instructions:
- Straight Tongue Couplers:
- Class 1: Use (4) 3/8" Grade 5 bolts through side holes or (2) 3/8" bolts with locknuts, torqued to SAE proof load specifications. No deformation of the tongue end is allowed.
- Class 2, 3, & 4: Use (4) 1/2" Grade 5 bolts through side holes or (2) 1/2" bolts with locknuts, torqued to SAE proof load specifications. No deformation of the tongue end is allowed.
- A-Frame Couplers:
- Designed for 50° trailer tongues. Use available mounting holes to bolt the coupler with Grade 5 bolts and locknuts.
- Torque bolts to SAE specifications:
- Ø 3/8": 23 ft-lbs.
- Ø 1/2": 55 ft-lbs.
- Ø 5/8": 110 ft-lbs.
- Adjustable Height Channels:
- Gussets are required if tongue height is 6 inches or less. Weld a 1/4” fillet weld around the mounting bracket.
- Secure using (2) 5/8” Grade 5 bolts, tightened to 100-110 ft-lbs.
Coupling Instructions:
To Couple:
- Block trailer wheels.
- Align the hitch ball beneath the coupler.
- Open the locking mechanism:
- Fas-Lok® Style: Pull latch trigger and lift locking lever.
- Yoke Style: Lift latch, raise yoke, and pull back.
- Low-Latch Style: Lift latch upward and pull back.
- Lower the coupler over the ball until fully seated.
- Secure the locking mechanism, ensuring proper engagement.
To Uncouple:
- Block trailer wheels.
- Fully open the locking mechanism.
- Raise the coupler off the hitch ball.
Maintenance:
- Perform the following at least annually:
- Check welds and mounting hardware for wear or damage.
- Grease the ball pocket.
- Oil pivot points with SAE 30 wt. motor oil.
- Inspect retaining pins and replace if necessary.
- Keep the ball pocket clean to prevent dirt accumulation.
- Store the coupler off the ground when not in use.
