Installation Instructions for Trailer Winches
Part Numbers:
- N142003
Tools Required:
- None specified
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Mounting the Winch:
- Ensure the winch stand supports at least five times the rated capacity of the winch.
- Use a mounting surface equal to or larger than the winch frame footprint.
- Secure with three (3) 3/8" diameter grade-5 bolts, torqued to 28-30 ft-lbs.
- Verify the winch is securely mounted to the structure.
Attaching the Winch Line:
- Rope:
- Weave the rope through the drum’s outer wall and secure it beneath itself.
- Strap:
- Use a grade-5 bolt of the largest possible diameter.
- Tighten the locknut until bolt end play is eliminated, avoiding over-tightening to prevent drum deformation.
- If attaching a strap without a strap anchor, remove the drum bolt and gently separate the plastic cover to remove the winch drum. Install the strap, then reassemble the winch drum. Torque the drum locknut to 9-10 ft-lbs (single-speed) or 24 ft-lbs (two-speed).
- Steel Cable:
- Pass the cable from inside the drum through a dimpled hole in the outer plate.
- Loop the cable around the drum bearing and under itself, leaving 1" extending past the clamp location.
- Tighten the clamp nuts to approximately 2 ft-lbs.
Using the Winch:
- Letting Out Line/Load:
- Firmly grip the handle and disengage the ratchet pawl.
- Slowly let out the line, ensuring the ratchet pawl engages when paused.
- Taking In Line/Load:
- Engage the ratchet pawl in the forward/loading position.
- Turn the handle to properly wind the line onto the drum.
- Ensure the ratchet pawl is engaged before stopping.
- Using Optional Hand Brake:
- Apply the brake to help control the load.
Maintenance:
- Inspect the line (rope, strap, or cable) for damage and replace as necessary.
- Apply light oil (#30 engine oil) to bushings and ratchet pivot points.
- Maintain a thin layer of grease on gear teeth.
Safety Notes:
- Never exceed the rated capacity.
- Ensure a minimum of three wraps of line on the drum at all times.
- Avoid using the winch to move humans or as a tie-down during towing.
- Replace worn or damaged parts before use.
- Always verify proper engagement of the ratchet pawl and ensure the handle is securely held during operation.
