Installation Instructions for Trailer Brake Controller Adapter

Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Determine Your Brake Control Installation Option

1 Plug Option:
- Using the supplied butt connectors, attach the adapter wires to the corresponding wires on the electric brake control.
- Follow the brake control installation instructions before attaching the adapter to the vehicle junction box.

2 Plug Option:
- Plug the brake control adapter into the mating receptacle on the backside of the brake control unit before attaching it to the vehicle junction box.
2. Locate the Vehicle’s Electric Junction Box
- Find the vehicle’s black Electric Junction Box:
- Located inside the pickup, underneath the dashboard, to the left of the steering column, just above the carpet.
- Remove the cover of the Electric Junction Box.
- Locate the mating connection point for the electric trailer brake wiring.
3. Plug in the Brake Control Adapter
- Connect the Brake Control Adapter into the mating connector located in the Electric Junction Box.
- Ensure a secure and proper connection.
4. Complete the Installation and Testing
- Follow the brake control manufacturer’s instructions to complete the installation.
- Mount the brake controller unit securely as directed.
- Perform test procedures as outlined in the brake controller manual.
Warnings:
- Do NOT overload the circuit:
- Maximum capacity: 4 axles / 8 brakes (24 amps).

- Wire Connector Crimp Tool
- Wire Cutter/Stripper
- Probe-Type Circuit Tester
Materials Required:
- 12-Gauge or larger wire
- 20-amp Automatic Reset Circuit Breaker (1–2 axles)
- 30-amp Automatic Reset Circuit Breaker (3 axles)
- Assorted Ring Terminals and Butt Connectors

Step-by-Step Installation Instructions:
1. Mounting Power Output/Boost Control and LED Indicator
- Select a mounting location on or near the dashboard.
- Mark surface for the control centers.
- Drill a top hole for the LED using an 8.0 mm (5/16 in) bit.
- Drill a bottom hole for the Power Output/Boost Control using a 9.1 mm (23/64 in) bit.
- Attach the descriptive label over each hole.
- Install the Power Output/Boost Control through the hole with the flat side down. Secure with washer and nut.
- Install the LED holder in the top hole, press LED into the holder, and tighten securely.
2. Mounting the Compact IQ™ Brake Control Unit

Orientation Requirements:
- Arrow on the unit must point in the direction of travel.
- Unit must be horizontal within ±20° and parallel to direction of travel.

Mounting Options:
- Use the provided bracket and screw for secure installation.
- Use the foam pad for adhesive mounting.
3. Wiring Instructions
Option 1: Plug & Play
- Locate factory tow package harness under the dash.
- Connect vehicle-specific Plug & Play harness to the tow package harness.
- Connect the other end to the brake control unit.
Option 2: Universal Installation
- Remove the Plug & Play Connector and splice wires as follows:
- Black Wire: Positive Battery (+) via 20A/30A Circuit Breaker.
- White Wire: Ground (-) to Battery Negative Terminal.
- Red Wire: Cold side of stoplight switch.
- Blue Wire: Brake output to trailer connector.
- Route wires away from the radio antenna to reduce interference.
Wiring Diagram:
- Black → Positive Battery (+)
- White → Ground (-)
- Red → Cold Side Stoplight Switch
- Blue → Brake Output to Trailer
Controls & Indicators:
LED Indicator:
- Off: No trailer detected or unit asleep.
- Green: Trailer detected; unit active.

- Flashing Red: Wiring issues (shorted brake magnets, ground connection failure).
Power Output Control:
- Adjusts maximum braking power. Rotate clockwise for more power.
Boost Control:
- Boost Levels:
- B0: Off
- B1: 15% initial braking power.
- B2/B3: 30% initial braking power for heavier trailers.
Safety Notes:
- Test Brake Control settings each time a trailer is connected.
- Adjust trailer brakes every 3,000 miles.
- Never exceed the lowest-rated capacity of the vehicle, hitch, or trailer.
