Reese Dual Jaw 16K Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Round Tube Slider 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Fits Industry Standard Above Bed Rail Kit by Reese Pro Series Husky Curt Valley Install Notes
Installation Instructions for 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch with Kwik-Slide Mounting Rails
Part Numbers:
- 30075 (Combines 30047 and 50024)
Tools Required:
- Torque Wrench
- 1/2" Socket and Wrench
- 3/8" Socket and Wrench
- White Lithium Grease
- Tape Measure
- Marking Pencil
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Guidelines for Matching Tow Vehicle and Trailer
- Ensure the gross trailer weight does not exceed 16,000 lbs and the kingpin weight is between 15-25% of the trailer weight, with a maximum of 4,000 lbs.
- Use a SAE 2-inch kingpin for compatibility.
- For short-bed trucks (6-8 ft.), ensure there is an extended pin box, and use the Kwik-Slide (50024) for additional turning clearance.
- Maintain a minimum of 6 inches of clearance between the truck bed rails and the trailer overhang.
Step 2: Install Base Rails and Mounting Brackets
- Place the base rails across the truck bed as instructed in the 50024 Kwik-Slide Mounting Rail Kit.
- Ensure the base rails are parallel and spaced 21-15/16 inches apart center-to-center. Check diagonal measurements to confirm alignment (difference should not exceed 1/8 inch).
- Insert the spacers beneath the truck bed to fill corrugations, ensuring proper rail placement.
- Attach the mounting brackets to the truck frame using the provided hardware.
- Torque all bolts to the specifications provided in the rail kit manual.
Step 3: Assemble the Fifth Wheel Hitch
- Attach the legs to the base rails using pull pins and spring retaining clips.
- Install the hitch head support onto the legs, setting the height between 13 and 17 inches using 1/2-13 x 4.5-inch bolts and lock nuts.
- Torque all bolts to 75 lb.-ft. using a torque wrench.
- Lubricate the skid plate with white lithium grease, or install a 10-inch plastic lube plate (not exceeding 3/16 inches thick).
Step 4: Install the Kwik-Slide Mechanism
- Position the Kwik-Slide (50024) in the base rails, ensuring proper alignment with the mounting slots.
- Grease the leaf springs and roller mechanisms on the Kwik-Slide with white lithium grease.
- Attach the hitch head support to the Kwik-Slide. Loosely fasten the bolts, ensuring they align with the height adjustment settings.
- Secure the handle assembly and indicator pin for proper operation monitoring.
- Tighten all Kwik-Slide hardware to the specified torque values.
Step 5: Hitching Procedure
- Block the trailer wheels securely on both sides.
- Adjust the trailer height using the landing gear so the kingpin is positioned 1/2 to 1 inch below the hitch skid plate.
- Open the hitch jaws by pulling the handle fully, ensuring the latch is rotated away from the groove.
- Slowly back the truck so the kingpin slides into the hitch. The jaws will close automatically around the kingpin, and the handle will lock into place.
- Ensure there is no gap between the kingpin and the hitch skid plate.
Step 6: Maneuvering with the Kwik-Slide
- Move the handle forward to unlock the Kwik-Slide mechanism.
- Use the truck to slide the hitch 10 inches rearward to the maneuvering position for low-speed operations, such as backing into tight spaces.
- Perform a pull test to ensure the Kwik-Slide is securely locked in the maneuvering position before proceeding.
- Once maneuvering is complete, return the hitch to the towing position by sliding it forward and locking it into place. Repeat the pull test.
Step 7: Unhitching Procedure
- Block the trailer wheels and ensure the truck is in park with the emergency brake engaged.
- Lower the trailer landing gear to support the trailer’s weight.
- Disconnect the power cable and breakaway switch cable.
- Rotate the latch to open the jaws and pull the handle fully to release the kingpin.
- Slowly drive the truck forward to separate from the trailer.
