Step-by-Step Instructions:

Lower Muffler:
- Use an exhaust hanger removal tool to lower the muffler by removing two (2) rubber hangers from the muffler and one (1) rubber hanger near the rear differential.
- Spray lubricant to ease removal.
- For dual exhaust systems, repeat on both sides.
- Support the exhaust system using a ratchet strap or bungee cord.

Remove Heat Shield:
- Use a 10 mm socket to remove four (4) bolts holding the heat shield to the vehicle.
- Retain bolts for reinstallation.
- For dual exhaust systems, repeat on both sides.

Remove Rubber Plugs:
- Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove three (3) rubber plugs from the forward holes in the frame.

Trim Heat Shield:
- Use tin snips or a hole saw to trim the heat shield to clear the rear carriage bolt and washer attachment area.

Install Fasteners:
- Feed the coiled end of a pull wire through the first attachment hole and out the forward-most access hole in the frame.
- Attach a 7/16” carriage bolt and special washer (item 3) to the pull wire and pull the fasteners into position. Repeat for both sides.
- Using the same process, install a 7/16” carriage bolt and a 1/4” x 7/8” x 3” spacer block (item 2) through the access hole into the forward attachment hole.

Install Flat Washers:
- Tape two (2) 1/2” flat washers (item 6) around the rearmost carriage bolts on the frame's bottom (one per side).

Install Hitch:
- Raise the hitch into position, ensuring fasteners are not pushed back into the frame.
- Loosely install 7/16” conical toothed washers (teeth side against hitch) and 7/16”-14 hex nuts onto the carriage bolts (four places).
- Ensure the flat washers sit flush against the frame bottom.

Tighten Fasteners:
- Tighten all 7/16-14 Gr5 fasteners to 50 Lb.-Ft. (68 N*M) using a torque wrench.

Reinstall Heat Shield:
- Use the retained bolts to reinstall the heat shield(s).

Reattach Muffler:
- Raise the muffler back into position and reattach all removed rubber hangers.

Prepare the Rear Cargo Area:
- Open the vehicle’s rear tailgate.
- Remove the cargo nets and cargo floor hatch to access the spare tire area.

Locate the Tow Plug Housing:
- 2009-2013 Subaru Forester: Remove the driver’s side and center foam cargo trays to locate the tow plug housing under the driver’s side foam tray.
- 2010-2019 Subaru Outback: Locate the tow plug housing behind the driver’s side trim panel. It is taped to the wire harness with blue tape.
- 2014-Current Subaru Forester / XV Crosstrek: Locate the tow plug housing behind the driver’s side trim panel. It is taped to the wire harness with tape.
- 2020-Current Subaru Outback: Temporarily remove the rear threshold plate. Locate the tow plug on the passenger side under the rear threshold plate. It is taped to the harness with tape.

Connect the T-Connector Harness:
- Insert the T-Connector harness into the vehicle’s tow plug housing and lock it into place.
- Ensure the connectors are fully inserted with the locking tabs engaged.
Warning:
- All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly.
- Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle's electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition.

Mount the Black Box:
- On the driver’s side, mount the T-Connector black box using the provided double-sided tape.
- Secure the remaining T-Connector harness with the provided cable ties, avoiding areas that could cut or pinch the wire.
