Tekonsha manufactures a wider range of different products for hooking up trailer lights to your Car Truck or SUV. Our connectors work great with boat trailer wiring and utility trailer wiring. Typically those trailers will use the standard 4 flat plug which is what our Wiring Kits offer. If you have an RV Fifth Wheel or any other large type of trailer you will us a 7 pin trailer plug to control your electric trailer brakes. Tekonsha offers 7 pin trailer connector as well. Simply do a search above to see if there is a 7 wire trailer wiring available for hooking up your 7 way. If there is not you can use part number 85343 trailer wiring adapter to convert any 4-Flat into a 7-Way. In addition you will use part number 20506 which will include the rest of wiring needed for electric brake controls. Lower Muffler:
- Use exhaust removal pliers to remove the rubber hangers (4 or 5 depending on the vehicle year) holding the muffler.
- Apply lubricant or soapy water to ease the removal process.
- Support the muffler to prevent damage.

Remove Rubber Plugs:
- Remove the rubber plugs from the existing holes in the vehicle frame (2 or 3 depending on the vehicle year) on each side.

Enlarge Holes (If Necessary):
- Drill the rear-most hole with a 1/2" bit and the forward-most hole with a 1/4" bit. Use a file to smooth the edges.

Install Fasteners:
- Use the pull wire to guide the carriage bolts and spacer blocks through the rear-most hole and out the forward-most hole in the frame.
- For the rear-most holes, use a reverse fish wire method to pull the fasteners into position.

Position Hitch:
- Carefully raise the hitch into position, ensuring that the fasteners remain in place.
- Install the flat washers, lock washers, and nuts onto the fasteners, ensuring that spacer blocks are positioned between the vehicle frame and the hitch at the forward-most holes.

Torque Fasteners:
- Tighten all 7/16"-14 fasteners to 50 Lb.-Ft. (68 N*M).

Raise Muffler:
- Reattach the muffler to its original position using the rubber hangers.

- Open the vehicle’s rear tailgate.
- Remove the cargo nets and cargo floor hatch to access the spare tire area.

Locate the Tow Plug Housing:
- 2009-2013 Subaru Forester: Remove the driver’s side and center foam cargo trays to locate the tow plug housing under the driver’s side foam tray.
- 2010-2019 Subaru Outback: Locate the tow plug housing behind the driver’s side trim panel. It is taped to the wire harness with blue tape.
- 2014-Current Subaru Forester / XV Crosstrek: Locate the tow plug housing behind the driver’s side trim panel. It is taped to the wire harness with tape.
- 2020-Current Subaru Outback: Temporarily remove the rear threshold plate. Locate the tow plug on the passenger side under the rear threshold plate. It is taped to the harness with tape.
