Installation Instructions for Subaru Forester

- Wrenches: 3/4", 10mm

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Lower Exhaust:
- Disconnect the rubber exhaust hangers from the hanger brackets to lower the exhaust.

Remove Heat Shield:
- Remove four (4) screws securing the heat shield to the frame rail.
- Set the heat shield aside. Note: The heat shield must be discarded or trimmed to fit after the hitch is installed.

Remove Plastic Plugs:
- Remove three (3) plastic plugs from existing holes in each frame rail and discard them.

Modify Access Holes:
- Using a 3/8" drill bit and a metal file, enlarge the center hole in each frame rail to allow for fishwiring spacers and carriage bolts (see Figure 2).

Fishwire Fasteners:
- Using the provided fishwire, pull the 1/2" carriage bolts and spacers through the modified access hole and down through the mounting holes in the frame rail (see Figure 3).
- Ensure that blocks span both sides of the hole and are not overlapping (see Figure 4).

Install Hitch:
- Raise the hitch into position, being careful not to push fasteners into the frame.
- Secure the hitch using conical washers (teeth side facing the hitch) and hex nuts.

Reinstall Heat Shield:
- Trim the heat shield to fit around the hitch if necessary, and reinstall it with the screws removed in Step 2.

Reinstall Exhaust:
- Raise the exhaust back into position and reconnect the rubber hangers.
Torque Specifications:
- Tighten all 1/2"-13 GR5 fasteners to 75 ft-lb (102 N*m).

- (6) Carriage Bolts, 1/2"-13 x 1.75" GR5
- (6) Spacer Blocks, 1/4" x 1" x 3" (Square Hole for 1/2" Carriage Bolt)
- (6) Conical Washers, 1/2"
- (6) Hex Nuts, 1/2"-13
- (6) Pull Wires, 1/2"
Safety Notes:
- Frequently check the hitch to ensure all fasteners and the ball are securely tightened.
- If the hitch is removed, plug all holes in the trunk pan or body panels to prevent water or exhaust fumes from entering.
- Replace any damaged hitch or ball immediately.
- Observe safety precautions when working beneath the vehicle and wear eye protection.
- Do not cut access or attachment holes with a torch.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Lower Exhaust:

- Trim the heat shield to fit around the hitch if necessary, and reinstall it with the screws removed in Step 2.

Reinstall Exhaust:
- Raise the exhaust back into position and reconnect the rubber hangers.
Torque Specifications:
- Tighten all 1/2"-13 GR5 fasteners to 75 ft-lb (102 N*m).
