Draw-Tite Gooseneck Trailer Hitch for 99-16 Ford F250 F350 Turnover w/ Brackets Rails Under Bed 2-5/16" Ball Install Notes
Installation Instructions for Gooseneck Mounting Kit
Part Number:
- 9486-49 (Combines Parts 4449 and 9486/9487)
Tools Required:
- Torque Wrench
- Wrenches: 7/16", 9/16", 5/8", 11/16", 3/4", 15/16", 13 mm
- Drill with 1/4" Bit
- Tape Measure
- Hole Saw (refer to specific hitch instructions for size)
- Cable Ties
- Marking Pencil
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Safety and Preliminary Checks
- Ensure that the Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) does not exceed the manufacturer’s towing capacity.
- Check for at least 6 inches of clearance between the gooseneck trailer and the truck’s rear cab and bed walls.
- Before drilling, verify the location of fuel lines, brake lines, and electrical wiring along the truck frame. Protect these components from damage using shields as needed.
- For gas engine vehicles, relocate the vapor tube running along the driver’s side frame rail:
- Remove the flange nut holding the tube and rotate the tubes up and out of the way.
- Attach the provided L-bracket with 1/4" hardware, but leave the tube holder loose for adjustment during installation.
Step 2: Install the Cross Members
-
Rear Cross Member Installation:
- Position the rear cross member by inserting one end above the truck frame and maneuvering the notched section of the opposite end above the frame.
- Temporarily align the cross member with the rear hat channel of the truck bed.
-
Forward Cross Member Installation:
- Insert the notched end of the forward cross member above the driver’s side frame and maneuver the opposite end over the exhaust system and frame.
- Ensure the cross members are aligned and parallel to each other.
Step 3: Install Side Brackets
-
Position Side Brackets:
- Attach the driver’s and passenger’s side brackets loosely using the provided 5/8" hardware.
- Use the supplied U-bolts for the forward attachment to the truck frame:
- On the passenger’s side, the U-bolt should pass through the mounting slots at an angle.
-
Install Carriage Bolts:
- Insert the 5/8" carriage bolts through the side brackets, frame, and cross members. Secure with toothed washers and hex nuts, leaving them finger-tight for adjustments.
Step 4: Drill and Prepare the Truck Bed
-
Mark the Hole Location:
- Measure 46-3/16 inches from the rear of the truck bed, centering the mark between the wheel wells.
- Drill a 1/4" pilot hole at this location.
-
Enlarge the Hole:
- Use a hole saw to cut the final diameter as specified in the Hide-A-Goose or other hitch instructions.
- File the edges of the hole to remove sharp burrs.
-
Align the Hitch:
- Position the Hide-A-Goose hitch or equivalent in the truck bed, ensuring the ball sleeve aligns with the drilled hole.
Step 5: Secure the Hitch Assembly
-
Tighten the Fasteners:
- Torque the fasteners securing the cross members and side brackets to the specified values:
- 5/8" fasteners: 150 lb.-ft.
- 1/2" U-bolt fasteners: 75 lb.-ft.
- Torque the fasteners securing the cross members and side brackets to the specified values:
-
Install Safety Chain U-Bolts:
- Drill holes for the U-bolts as marked by the hitch. Insert the U-bolts through the bed and secure with washers, springs, and jam nuts.
- Tighten until three threads are visible past the bottom of the jam nut.
-
Install Shims:
- Place the provided shims between the hitch, cross members, and truck bed to prevent bed corrugation from collapsing when bolts are tightened.
Step 6: Final Adjustments
-
Reinstall Exhaust System:
- Use the supplied exhaust brackets if the clearance between the exhaust and cross members is less than 1/2 inch.
- Secure the exhaust brackets to the frame with the provided hardware.
-
Reattach Vapor Tube (Gas Vehicles Only):
- Secure the vapor tube holder to the L-bracket using the factory flange nut removed earlier.
Maintenance Schedule:
-
Before Each Use:
- Ensure the gooseneck ball is properly lubricated and fully locked in place.
- Check all fasteners for proper torque.
- Inspect the safety chains, coupler, and ball sleeve for wear or damage.
-
Annually:
- Re-torque all fasteners to the specified values.
- Inspect the hitch assembly, cross members, and side brackets for cracks, rust, or damage.
