Installation Instructions for Electronic Brake Control for 2 & 4 Brake Systems

Product Information:

Part Number: N83501
Application: Compatible with 2 and 4 trailer brake systems

Package Contents:

Brake Control Unit
Mounting Bracket
Mounting Screws (#6 x 3/8") (Qty: 4)
Wire Tap Connector

Tools Required:

Drill with 1/8" drill bit
Screwdriver or 1/4" Nut Driver
Wire Stripper/Cutter
Wire Crimping Tool
Circuit Tester (Probe Type)

Mounting Instructions:

Select Mounting Location:
- Choose a solid surface within easy reach of the driver.
- Verify there are no obstructions behind the panel before drilling.
Install the Bracket:
- Hold the mounting bracket in place and mark the holes using the bracket’s slots.
- Drill two 1/8" holes in the marked locations.
- Secure the bracket using two self-tapping screws provided.
Attach the Brake Control:
- Slide the Brake Control into the bracket.
- Secure the Brake Control with the remaining screws.

Wiring Instructions:

Black Wire (Battery +):
- Connect to the positive battery terminal using a 20A auto-reset circuit breaker.
White Wire (Ground -):
- Connect to a clean, bare metal surface on the vehicle chassis.
Red Wire (Stoplight Switch):
- Connect to the cold side of the stoplight switch (only active when the brake pedal is pressed).
Blue Wire (Trailer Brake):
- Connect to the trailer brake wire at the 7-way connector.

Special Instructions for 1989-1991 Ford E and F Series with Anti-Lock Brakes:

Do NOT connect to the stoplight switch.
Locate the turn signal harness connector near the steering column.
Splice the red wire to the light green wire using the provided wire tap connector.

Control Functions:

Output Control:
- Adjusts the maximum power delivered to the trailer brakes.
- Turn the knob left to increase power; turn it right to decrease power.
Sync Control:
- Adjusts brake aggressiveness or the delay in applying full power.
- Turn + (forward) for more aggressive braking.
- Turn – (backward) for less aggressive braking.
Manual Control:
- Applies the trailer brakes independently of the vehicle brakes.
- Slide the control to the left to activate the trailer brakes.
- Power applied is determined by the Output Control setting.
Output Indicator:
- The red light glows dimly when braking begins and becomes brighter as power increases.

Setup and Adjustment:

Initial Settings:
- Set the Sync Control halfway between + and –.
- Set the Output Control to the lowest position (fully to the right).
Brake Test:
- Roll forward slowly and apply the brakes.
- If no trailer braking is felt, adjust the Output Control slightly to the left.
- Repeat until firm trailer braking is achieved. If brakes lock up, adjust the Output Control to the right slightly.
Sync Adjustment:
- Move the Sync Control back toward the driver to about 1/4 of the way between + and –.
- Test drive and adjust the Sync Control for smooth, firm stops.
Final Verification:
- Check that both the tow vehicle and trailer stoplights activate when the Manual Control is used.

Troubleshooting Guide:

Trailer brakes inconsistent	Poor ground connection	Check and secure White Wire ground.
Red light does not activate	No stoplight signal to Red Wire	Check stoplight switch connection.
