Installation Instructions for 2011-2018 BMW X5

Installation Time:

• Approximately 45 minutes for professional installers.

Tools Required:

• Ratchet Torque Wrench

• 6” Socket Extension
• Utility Knife

• Drill Bit: 3/16”

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Install Receiver Housing:

   • Unlock the blue handle using the provided key.
   • Remove the housing from the receiver by pressing and rotating the handle clockwise until it clicks.
   • Install the weather covers on the receiver housing.
   • Attach the housing to the hitch using the M12 bolt, flat washer, and prevailing torque nut.
   • Tighten the fasteners to 92 Lb.-Ft. (125 N*M).

2. Remove Rear Bumper Fascia:

   • Remove 2 or 3 plastic rivets from the wheel well molding (each side). Discard rivets.
   • Pull back the molding to locate and remove screws (1 or 2 per side).
   • Remove 6 screws from the bottom of the fascia.
   • Detach the reflectors by releasing their clips and remove the screws behind them.
   • Remove the tail lights and disconnect the electrical harness.
   • Pull the fascia outward and rearward to remove it. Disconnect the electrical wiring on the passenger side.

3. Remove Impact Bar:

   • Use an 18mm socket to remove the impact bar. Retain the nuts for hitch installation. Return the bar to the vehicle owner.

4. Seal Openings:

   • Use silicone sealant to seal around openings on the end panel of both sides.

5. Install Hitch:

   • Raise the hitch into position and loosely install the flange nuts to secure it.

6. Tighten Fasteners:

   • Tighten all M12 fasteners to 65 Lb.-Ft. (88 N*M) using a torque wrench.

7. Trim Fascia (if required):

   • For 2013 and older models, trim the fascia using a utility knife as specified: 8.5” wide x 5” high at the bottom center.

8. Reinstall Components:

   • Reattach the fascia using the provided rivets. Ensure proper alignment of all fascia tabs.
   • Reinstall the tail lights, reflectors, and reconnect any electrical connections.

• Phillips Head #2 Screwdriver
• Wire Cutters
• Wire Strippers/Wire Crimpers
• Tester or Volt Meter
• Socket & Ratchet Set
• Drill with 3/32” Drill Bit
• Double-Sided Tape

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Tow Vehicle Inputs - Determination:

1. Disconnect and isolate the vehicle's negative battery terminal.
   • Warning: Read and follow all warnings and instructions on the tow vehicle's battery.
2. Splice the tow harness input wires to the vehicle as determined.
   • Caution: Use appropriate gauge wire splices. Blue taps are for 16-18 gauge wires only.

Harness Installation:

1. Determine the mounting location of the module and secure it using the double-sided tape provided.
   • Warning: Mount the module with the epoxy side pointed towards the ground to prevent water buildup.
2. Locate a suitable grounding point near the module, such as an existing ground stud, or drill a 3/32” hole to secure the white wire using the provided eyelet and screw.
   • Caution: Verify what is behind any surface before drilling to avoid damage or personal injury.
3. Route the power wire to the vehicle’s positive battery terminal. Use the provided fuse holder, butt connector, and ring terminal to connect to the battery.
   • Do not insert the 15 amp fuse yet.
   • Caution: Ensure the module is connected to a constant power source and avoid routing the wire near hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tanks, or pinch points.

Completion:

1. Secure the harness with cable ties provided to prevent damage or rattling.
2. Reconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable.
3. Insert the 15 amp fuse into the fuse holder and close the cap.
4. Test the installation using a test light or trailer. Check each function independently and in combination.
