Step-by-Step Instructions:

Lower the Exhaust:
- Temporarily lower the exhaust system by removing the two rubber isolators from the muffler hangers and one below the rear axle.
- Note: Spray hangers with lubricant to ease removal. For dual exhaust systems, repeat on both sides.

Lower Heat Shields:
- Temporarily lower the heat shields by removing four (4) M6 bolts.
- Save the bolts for reinstallation.
-
Remove Rubber Plugs:
- Remove the rubber plugs from the holes in the bottom of the frame.
-
Drill Access Hole:
- Drill a 1-1/8” access hole in the bottom of the frame approximately 2” from the forward heat shield attachment point (see Figure 1).
-
Fishwire Carriage Bolts:
- Fishwire a 7/16”-14 x 1.5” carriage bolt and a 1” x 2” spacer block through the access hole and down through the rearmost hole in the frame.
- Repeat with a 1” x 3” spacer block for the forward hole.

Position the Hitch:
- Raise the hitch into position, aligning the holes in the hitch with the carriage bolts. Be careful not to push bolts back into the frame.

Install Rear Fasteners:
- Loosely install conical toothed washers and hex nuts onto the rearmost carriage bolts.
-
Install Forward Fasteners:
- Place a flat washer between the forward carriage bolt and the hitch bracket.
- Install conical toothed washers and hex nuts onto the forward carriage bolts.
- Tighten all fasteners to the specified torque (50 lb-ft or 68 N·m).

Trim Heat Shields:
- Trim the heat shields around the forward attachment bolt area to ensure they sit flat against the hitch bracket.

Reinstall Heat Shields:
- Reattach the heat shields on top of the hitch brackets using the four (4) M6 bolts removed earlier.

Reinstall the Exhaust:
- Raise the exhaust back into position and reattach the rubber isolators, including the one under the axle.

Prepare the Rear Cargo Area:
- Open the vehicle’s rear tailgate.
- Remove the cargo nets and cargo floor hatch to access the spare tire area.

Locate the Tow Plug Housing:
- 2009-2013 Subaru Forester: Remove the driver’s side and center foam cargo trays to locate the tow plug housing under the driver’s side foam tray.
- 2010-2019 Subaru Outback: Locate the tow plug housing behind the driver’s side trim panel. It is taped to the wire harness with blue tape.
- 2014-Current Subaru Forester / XV Crosstrek: Locate the tow plug housing behind the driver’s side trim panel. It is taped to the wire harness with tape.
- 2020-Current Subaru Outback: Temporarily remove the rear threshold plate. Locate the tow plug on the passenger side under the rear threshold plate. It is taped to the harness with tape.

Connect the T-Connector Harness:
- Insert the T-Connector harness into the vehicle’s tow plug housing and lock it into place.
- Ensure the connectors are fully inserted with the locking tabs engaged.
Warning:
- All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly.
- Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle's electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition.

Mount the Black Box:
- On the driver’s side, mount the T-Connector black box using the provided double-sided tape.
- Secure the remaining T-Connector harness with the provided cable ties, avoiding areas that could cut or pinch the wire.
Note:
- Store the 4-flat connector in the spare tire compartment when not in use.
Warning:
- Overloading circuits can cause fires. Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer’s rating or the following specifications:
- Max. stop/turn light: 1 per side (2.1 amps)
