Installation Instructions for Subaru Legacy and Outback

Wiring Access Location:

Tools Required:

• Wrenches: 10mm, 11/16"
• Drill with 1-1/8" Hole Saw
• Tin Snips
• Spray Lubricant

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Lower Exhaust System:

   • Remove two (2) rubber isolators from the muffler hangers and one (1) from below the rear axle to temporarily lower the exhaust system.
   • For dual exhaust models, repeat this step on both sides.

2. Lower Heat Shields:

   • Remove four (4) M6 bolts to temporarily lower the heat shields.
   • Retain the bolts for reinstallation.

3. Prepare Frame:

   • Remove the rubber plugs from the holes in the bottom of the frame.
   • Drill a 1-1/8" access hole in the bottom of the frame approximately 2" from the forward heat shield attachment point (refer to Figure 1).

4. Insert Fasteners:

   • Fish-wire a 7/16"-14 x 1.50 GR5 carriage bolt and a 1 x 2 spacer block through the access hole and down through the rear-most hole in the bottom of the frame.
   • Fish-wire another carriage bolt and a 1 x 3 spacer block through the access hole and down through the forward-most hole in the bottom of the frame.
   • Leave fish wires attached and guide them through the hitch holes.

5. Install Hitch:

   • Raise the hitch into position, ensuring the holes in the hitch align with the carriage bolts in the frame.
   • Secure the rear carriage bolts with conical toothed washers and hex nuts, but do not tighten fully.
   • Place a flat washer on each forward carriage bolt between the frame and the hitch bracket. Secure with conical toothed washers and hex nuts.

6. Trim Heat Shields:

   • Trim the heat shields around the forward attachment bolt area so they sit flat against the hitch bracket.

7. Reinstall Components:

   • Reattach the heat shields on top of the hitch brackets using the four (4) M6 bolts removed earlier.
   • Raise the exhaust back into position and reattach the rubber isolators, including the one under the axle.

Torque Specifications:

• Tighten all 7/16"-14 GR5 fasteners to 50 ft-lb (68 N*m).

• (4) Carriage Bolt, 7/16"-14 x 1.50 GR5
• (2) Spacer Block, 3/16" x 1 x 2
• (2) Spacer Block, 1/4" x 1 x 3
• (4) Conical Toothed Washer, 7/16"
• (4) Hex Nut, 7/16"-14
• (2) Flat Washer, 7/16"
• (4) Fish Wire, 7/16"

Safety Notes:

• Frequently check the hitch to ensure all fasteners and the ball are securely tightened.
• If the hitch is removed, plug all holes in the trunk pan or other body panels to prevent water or exhaust fumes from entering.
• Replace any damaged hitch or ball immediately.
• Observe safety precautions when working beneath the vehicle and wear eye protection.
• Do not cut access or attachment holes with a torch.

• Max Gross Trailer Weight: 3,500 lb (1,589 kg)
• Max Tongue Weight: 300 lb (136 kg)
• Drawbar must be used in the RISE position only.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Installation Instructions for T-Connector Adapter for Subaru (Forester, Outback, XV Crosstrek)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Prepare the Rear Cargo Area:

   • Open the vehicle’s rear tailgate.
   • Remove the cargo nets and cargo floor hatch to access the spare tire area.

2. Locate the Tow Plug Housing:

   • 2009-2013 Subaru Forester: Remove the driver’s side and center foam cargo trays to locate the tow plug housing under the driver’s side foam tray.
   • 2010-2019 Subaru Outback: Locate the tow plug housing behind the driver’s side trim panel. It is taped to the wire harness with blue tape.
   • 2014-Current Subaru Forester / XV Crosstrek: Locate the tow plug housing behind the driver’s side trim panel. It is taped to the wire harness with tape.
   • 2020-Current Subaru Outback: Temporarily remove the rear threshold plate. Locate the tow plug on the passenger side under the rear threshold plate. It is taped to the harness with tape.

3. Connect the T-Connector Harness:

   • Insert the T-Connector harness into the vehicle’s tow plug housing and lock it into place.
   • Ensure the connectors are fully inserted with the locking tabs engaged.

   Warning:

   • All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly.
   • Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle's electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition.

4. Mount the Black Box:

   • On the driver’s side, mount the T-Connector black box using the provided double-sided tape.
   • Secure the remaining T-Connector harness with the provided cable ties, avoiding areas that could cut or pinch the wire.

   Note:

   • Store the 4-flat connector in the spare tire compartment when not in use.

   Warning:

   • Overloading circuits can cause fires. Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer’s rating or the following specifications:
     • Max. stop/turn light: 1 per side (2.1 amps)
     • Max. tail lights: (5.6 amps)
