Warnings:
- This hitch is designed for medium-duty trucks (e.g., Freightliner or Ford F-650). DO NOT use on light-duty pickups.
- Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s rated towing capacities.
- Maintain at least 6 inches of clearance between the truck bed walls and the trailer.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Assembly:
- Attach side plates to the base using 3/4” bolts and lock washers. Torque to 200 ft-lbs.
- Position the base assembly vertically above or 4 inches ahead of the rear axle.
- Mark and drill four 5/8” holes through the truck bed and a 1/2” steel plate below.
- Secure the base assembly using 5/8” Grade 5 carriage bolts (not supplied), lock nuts, and washers.
2. Lubrication:
- Lubricate pivot pins and points in the head and base assembly using engine oil or spray lube.
- Grease the skid plate surface with chassis grease or a plastic lube plate (10” diameter, 3/16” thick).
3. Hitching Procedure:
- Block trailer wheels securely to prevent movement.
- Adjust the trailer height using landing gear so the bottom of the pin box is 1/2" to 1" below the hitch skid plate.
- Back the truck slowly into the trailer. Ensure the kingpin engages the hitch jaws.
- Verify the jaws are fully closed, and the handle is locked in place.
4. Pull Test:
- Keep the trailer wheels blocked and the landing gear supporting the trailer.
- Apply trailer brakes and attempt to pull forward gently to confirm a secure connection.
- If the trailer separates, repeat the hitching procedure.
5. Unhitching Procedure:
- Lower the landing gear to support the trailer weight.
- Disconnect the electrical and breakaway cables.
- Open the handle latch and pull the handle to release the kingpin.
- Drive the truck away slowly, ensuring the trailer remains stationary.
Maintenance:
- Inspect all bolts and pins every 1,000 miles and retorque as necessary.
- Lubricate pivot points and the skid plate regularly.
- Visually check all cotter pins and snap rings for proper placement and wear.
