Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle
- Lower and remove the spare tire to create working space.
- Remove the inner plastic wheel well liner for frame access (if necessary).
- Detach any electrical wire loom and brake lines from the driver-side frame to avoid interference during installation.
Step 2: Position the Rear Mounting Rail
- Place the rear base rail into the truck bed.
- Measure the correct distance from the rear edge of the truck bed:
- Long Bed: 28-3/16”
- Short Bed: 26-1/4”
- Ensure the rail is centered side-to-side between the truck bed weld seams.
Step 3: Mark and Drill Rear Rail Holes
- Use a center punch to mark the hole positions in Rows 1 and 2 of the rear rail.
- Drill 1/8” pilot holes through the marked positions.
- Check that the pilot holes align with the slots in the rear frame brackets.
- Enlarge the pilot holes to 9/16” (Row 1) and 1-1/8” (Row 2 - bed corrugations only).
- Paint any bare metal to prevent rust.
Step 4: Install Rear Frame Brackets
- Attach the rear brackets (driver and passenger sides) to the truck frame using the M12-40mm bolts and 1/2” conical washers.
- Loosely secure the brackets for now.
Step 5: Secure the Rear Base Rail
- Reposition the rear rail over the drilled holes.
- Insert the 1/2”-13 x 2” carriage bolts through the rail and bed.
- Place U-shaped spacers in the corrugations to prevent crushing the bed.
- On Row 2, insert the 4-1/2” carriage bolts with tube spacers to pass through the bed sill.
- Underneath the bed, secure the bolts with:
- 1/4” x 1” x 3” spacer blocks (as needed), 1/2” conical washers, and 1/2” nuts.
- Snug the hardware to keep the rail in position but do not torque fully.
Step 6: Position the Front Mounting Rail
- Insert the 5th wheel hitch, slider, or goose into the rear rail to help position the front rail.
- Place the front rail into the truck bed, aligning it with the hitch tabs.
- Ensure the rail is centered between the bed weld seams.
Step 7: Mark and Drill Front Rail Holes
- Use a center punch to mark the hole positions in Rows 3 and 4.
- Drill 1/8” pilot holes and check alignment with the front frame brackets.
- Enlarge the holes to 9/16”. Paint all bare metal.
Step 8: Install Front Frame Brackets
- Attach the front brackets (driver and passenger sides) to the truck frame using the same process as the rear brackets.
- Ensure no brake lines or wire looms are pinched.
Step 9: Secure the Front Base Rail
- Install 1/2”-13 x 2” carriage bolts through the front rail and bed.
- Use U-shaped spacers and 1/4” spacer blocks as needed to fill corrugations.
- Loosely attach the hardware underneath with 1/2” conical washers and 1/2”-13 nuts.
Step 10: Final Torque of All Hardware
- Torque all hardware in the following sequence:
- 1/2” Carriage Bolts: 75 ft-lbs.
- M12 Bolts: 92 ft-lbs.
- First, torque the base rails to the frame brackets.
- Then, torque the frame brackets to the truck frame.
Step 11: Reinstall Components
- Reattach any electrical wire loom or brake lines to the driver-side frame.
- Reinstall the spare tire and any removed plastic wheel well liners.
Safety Notes:
- Do not install mounting rails over plastic bed liners. Cut the liner to allow for metal-to-metal contact.
- Base rails can be installed on spray-in bed liners after proper curing.
- Always verify trailer-to-truck clearance at the cab and bumper to prevent interference.
Specifications:
- Maximum Tongue Weight: 4,500 lbs (2,040 kg)
- Maximum Gross Trailer Weight: 18,000 lbs (8,160 kg)
- Compliance: SAE J-684
