Installation Instructions for Subaru Legacy Sedan/Wagon and Subaru Outback Sedan/Wagon
(Excluding Sport Models)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Lower the Exhaust:
- Remove the four muffler hangers (two per side) to allow the exhaust to hang down away from the frame.

Remove Forward Bracket Bolts:
- On wagon models, remove the forwardmost bolt (one per side) from the bracket bolted to the underside of the frame at the back of the vehicle.
- For sedan and wagon models, remove the plastic plugs covering the weld nuts in the vehicle frame.

Position the Hitch:
- Raise the hitch into position and loosely install the tow hook fasteners as shown in Figure 1.

Install Spacer Blocks:
- Depending on the vehicle model, block locations will vary.
- Use the appropriate block combination to fill the gaps between the hitch brackets and the vehicle frame (refer to Figure 2).

Secure Fasteners:
- Tighten 1/2"-13 GR5 fasteners to 75 lb-ft (102 N·m).
- Tighten M10 CL8.8 fasteners to 38 lb-ft (52 N·m).

Reinstall Muffler Hangers:
- Reattach the four muffler hangers.

- (4) Large Spacer Blocks
- (7) Small Spacer Blocks
- (3) 1/2"-13 x 1-3/4” GR5 Carriage Bolts
- (6) 1/2"-13 Hex Nuts
- (2) 3/8” Conical Washers
- (5) 1/2” Conical Washers
- (4) M10 x 1.25 x 40mm Hex Bolts
Safety Notes:
- Check the hitch frequently to ensure all fasteners and the ball are properly tightened.
- If the hitch is removed, plug all holes in the trunk pan or other body panels to prevent water and exhaust fumes from entering.
- Replace any damaged hitch or ball immediately.
- Follow all safety precautions when working beneath the vehicle, and wear eye protection.
- Do not cut access or attachment holes with a torch.
