Installation and Maintenance Instructions for Stamped Couplers
Specifications:
- Rated according to SAE J684.
- Minimum tongue overlap:
- Straight Tongue Couplers: 6.5 inches.
- A-Frame Couplers: Only compatible with 50° trailer tongues.
Tools Required:
- Torque wrench
- Grade 5 bolts with locknuts
- SAE 30 wt. motor oil
- Grease for ball pocket
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Bolting Instructions:
- Ensure the coupler’s internal stop is butted against the end of the trailer tongue for maximum overlap.
- Follow the trailer manufacturer’s specifications for the number and size of fasteners.
Straight Tongue Couplers:
- Class 1 Couplers:
- Preferred: Use (4) 3/8” grade 5 bolts through side holes.
- Alternate: Use (2) 3/8” grade 5 through bolts and locknuts. Torque to SAE proof load specifications. Ensure no deformation of the trailer tongue end.
- Class 2, 3, and 4 Couplers:
- Preferred: Use (4) 1/2” grade 5 bolts through side holes.
- Alternate: Use (2) 1/2” grade 5 through bolts and locknuts. Torque to SAE proof load specifications. Ensure no deformation of the trailer tongue end.
A-Frame Couplers:
- Use with 50° trailer tongues only.
- Bolt coupler to tongue members using grade 5 hardware with locknuts. Torque bolts to SAE proof load specifications:
- Ø 3/8”: 23 ft-lbs.
- Ø 1/2”: 55 ft-lbs.
- Ø 5/8”: 110 ft-lbs.
Adjustable Height Channels:
- For tongues 6” or less in height, gussets are required.
- Center the mounting bracket on the tongue and weld a 1/4” minimum fillet weld around the bracket.
- Secure the coupler using (2) 5/8” x 5” grade 5 bolts through the mounting bracket holes.
- Tighten locknuts to 100-110 ft-lbs.
Weld-On Instructions:
- All welding must be performed by an AWS-certified welder.
- Ensure a 6.5” minimum overlap between the coupler and trailer tongue.
- Weld on both sides and the top using:
- Straight Tongue Couplers: 1/8" fillet weld.
- A-Frame Couplers: 3/16" fillet weld.
Maintenance Instructions:
- Perform the following at least annually:
- Check welds and mounting bolt torque.
- Grease the ball pocket.
- Oil pivot points with SAE 30 wt. motor oil.
- Inspect retaining pins and replace if necessary.
- Keep the ball pocket clean to avoid debris buildup.
Coupling and Uncoupling Instructions:
To Couple:
- Block trailer wheels.
- Align the hitch ball beneath the coupler ball pocket.
- Follow coupler-specific steps to secure the coupler to the hitch ball:
- Fas-Lok® Coupler: Lift latch trigger, ensure proper engagement, and check ball seating.
- Yoke-Style Coupler: Lift latch, raise yoke, and lower coupler over hitch ball. Engage latch handle and check ball seating.
- Low-Latch Coupler: Open locking lever, lower coupler, and ensure latch engagement.
To Uncouple:
- Block trailer wheels.
- Open locking lever and raise the trailer off the hitch ball.
- Return handle to the closed position.
Safety Notes:
- Never exceed the rated capacity of the coupler, hitch, or vehicle.
- Always use the correct hitch ball size as indicated on the coupler body.
- Secure the load and block wheels before latching or unlatching.
- Regularly inspect coupler components and replace worn or damaged parts.
