Installation Instructions for Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Accent 3-Door, and Kia Rio 5

Wiring Access Location:

• Hyundai Elantra and Kia Rio 5: PC3, PC4
• Hyundai Accent: PC1, PC2

Tools Required:

• Wrenches: 17mm, 19mm
• Small Phillips Tip Screwdriver
• Drill Bits: None

Specifications:

• Max Gross Trailer Weight: 2,000 lb. (908 kg)
• Max Tongue Weight: 200 lb. (90.8 kg)
• Note: Do not exceed the towing vehicle manufacturer’s rating.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Remove Plastic Supports:

   • Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew plastic screws while applying pressure on the opposite side. Remove both pieces of plastic from the support straps.

2. Trim Fascia Tab (Elantra and Rio 5 only):

   • Trim the center fascia tab as shown in Figure 2. Obtain vehicle owner’s approval before cutting.

3. Lower Exhaust:

   • Remove the rubber exhaust hanger to lower the vehicle’s exhaust system.

4. Position Hitch (Passenger Side First):

   • Lift the passenger side of the hitch into position, placing the crosstube over the tailpipe. Rotate the side bracket into place on the outside of the frame rail. Gently pull the fascia out of the way to assist installation (refer to Figure 2).

5. Position Hitch (Driver’s Side):

   • Lift the driver’s side of the hitch into position on the outside of the frame rail and in front of the bulkhead. Pull the fascia out of the way to assist installation.

6. Install Fasteners:

   • Install the fasteners as shown in Figure 1. Hand-tighten all bolts before fully securing.

7. Align and Tighten Hitch:

   • Push the hitch toward the rear of the vehicle to align it properly. Tighten all fasteners to the specified torque settings:
     • M10 CL8.8 bolts: 42 Lb.-Ft. (57 N*M)
     • M12 CL8.8 bolts: 76 Lb.-Ft. (103 N*M)

8. Reattach Exhaust:

   • Secure the rubber muffler hanger back into place.

9. Reattach Fascia Tabs:

   • Replace any removed fascia tabs.

• (4) M12 x 1.25 x 40mm CL8.8 Bolts
• (4) Conical Washers: 3/8”
• (4) Conical Washers: 1/2”
• (4) Spacers: 3/8” x 1-1/2” x 3”
• (4) M10 x 1.25 x 40mm CL8.8 Bolts (Rio 5 and Accent only)

• Regularly inspect all fasteners and the hitch ball to ensure they are securely tightened.
• If the hitch is removed, plug any holes in the trunk pan or body panels to prevent water and exhaust fumes from entering.

Installation Instructions for T-Connector Adapter for Kia Elantra

Part Numbers:

Tools Required:

• Trim Panel Remover
• Drill with 3/32” Drill Bit
• Philips Head Screwdriver
• Test Probe

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Access the Rear Cargo Area:

   • Open the trunk and temporarily remove the rear threshold plate.
   • Partially remove the felt trunk liner behind the taillights.

2. Locate the Taillight Wiring Harness:

   • On both the driver’s and passenger’s sides of the vehicle, locate the vehicle's taillight wiring harness.
   • Disconnect the connectors carefully to avoid breaking the locking tabs. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt.

3. Install the T-Connector on the Driver’s Side:

   • Insert the T-Connector end with the yellow wire between the vehicle wiring connectors on the driver’s side.
   • Lock into place, ensuring the connectors are fully inserted and the locking tabs are secure.

4. Route the Passenger-Side T-Connector:

   • Route the T-Connector end with the green wire to the passenger’s side behind the panels and along the threshold.
   • Repeat step 3 on the passenger’s side using the T-Connector with the green wire.

5. Ground the White Wire:

   • Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector.
   • Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area. Drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white wire using the provided eyelet and screw.
   • Caution: Verify what is behind the surface before drilling to avoid damage or injury. Do not drill into exposed surfaces.

6. Mount the Black Box:

   • In the driver’s side storage area, clean a flat area with a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water.
   • Mount the T-Connector black box using the provided double-sided tape.

7. Route and Store the 4-Flat Connector:

   • Route the 4-flat connector from below the threshold plate into the trunk. Store it in the trunk when not in use.

8. Reassemble the Vehicle:

   • Reinstall the felt trunk liner, threshold, and any other items removed during installation.
   • Be careful not to pinch or cut the wires.

9. Test the Installation:

   • Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer to ensure proper functionality.
   • For the initial test, reset the vehicle's electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition.

   Specifications:

   • Max. stop/turn light: 1 per side (2.1 amps)
   • Max. tail lights: (5 amps)
